Gig review: Ed Sheeran ♥

DOLLY fashion assistant Emily was lucky enough to see Ed Sheeran live in concert! Read on for her review of the night...

Less than a year after touring Australia, playing small sold out shows across the country, Ed Sheeran has returned this week to play some of his biggest shows to date.

We were lucky enough to catch him perform to his biggest crowd EVER of 12, 500 super-fans on Friday March 1st at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and boy, did he have everyone hooked with his every word!

The excitement in the air was electric and screams were almost ear-piercing when support act Passenger (who Ed used to support himself!) finished up and Ed hit the stage.

When he finally did, after plenty of anticipation, the crowd was deafening as Ed launched into Give Me Love. Dressed in his trademark casual gear, he soon revealed all the deets behind the technical side of his show – from how he plays with his loop station to showing how his guitar is hooked up to the LED screens and lighting behind him. He also let us all know that he had just been awarded a massive 19x platinum records (that’s equal to 1.3 MILLION records sold!) backstage and so he was feeling a little generous, extending his set especially for Sydney (lucky us!!).

From the start, Ed and his whole performance was beyond impressive. His lighting worked hand in hand with his guitar skills, reflecting the mood of his songs and intensifying as he got more and more into it. He jammed with his loop station and created some phenomenal backing tracks to his songs by building tracks layer by layer, creating all the beats himself. The crowd went MENTAL whenever he put down his guitar and let the track play as he worked the stage, rapping with the mic.

Ed calmed the vibe in the room halfway through the show when covering folk song ‘The Wayfaring Stranger’, hilariously telling the crowd his method of getting EVERYONE to be quiet. After “shhhhh” filled the room like a Mexican wave, Ed began my second favourite part of the show. Again, layer by layer, he built the track by beat-boxing, making a beat on his guitar, harmonising with his own voice and playing his guitar; enchanting everyone with his one chance to get the track right. The song peaked when Ed dropped the mic and sung acapella, completely filling the stadium with his voice – it gave me goose bumps and even those in the back row could hear him!

From there, the show got better and better with Ed getting both of his support acts Gab Alpin and Passenger on for a song , cracking everyone up with his attempt at an Aussie accent – he did pretty well to be honest, sitting Nathan the Koala toy (named after Nathan from Angry Boys) on his guitar for a super-cute and funny version of Wake Me Up, getting the crowd to harmonise on his songs with him and popping a bit of Bob Marley’s ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ into the mix.

After leaving the stage, Ed returned for his encore with an epic 15 minute version of ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’. Jamming with a crazy guitar solo that broke two strings, Ed threw his famed guitar to the side, running around the stage, rapping and singing the song faster and faster – with everyone somehow keeping up with him! He then broke up the crowd for his own West Side Story-style singing battle of the song before he got his guitar back and finished the song, dripping with sweat.

Everyone’s favourite A-Team perfectly concluded the evening as all the lights in the room were switched off and we all created a magical light show with our phones, making it look like there were a million fireflies in the room.
