What to wear to a garden party

One of the best things about summer is the open-air parties. What can be better than to chat with friends, dance and enjoy a good drink under the stars?

Garden parties can have different atmosphere and settings. They can be a casual hang-out in the yard of a friend, a wedding or a formal garden event. If the party is completely casual, you can wear whatever catches your fancy.

If you have a dress code

If there is a written invitation and a certain dress code is specified in it you will have to adhere to its requirements. This should not worry you in the least. There are plenty of articles on the Internet which describe what every dress code entails. A quick search will show that sometimes there are contradictions in the instructions coming from different sources. Sometimes in interpreting the requirements of a dress code, some specialists would allow for example dark denim jeans, while others are definitely against it. Whenever such contradictions arise, it is always better to choose the classic side in order to avoid feeling uncomfortable at the event.

Often at the mention of a garden party our imagination creates an associated image of frivolous dress. As we saw above, this is not always the case. It is important to find the balance between the snobbish legalism and rigid adhering to the rules and defying the rules altogether. Regardless of what the dress code requirements are, moderation should always be a top priority. In this way whatever you decide to wear you will not feel uncomfortable or out of place.

If there is no specified dress code

If your garden party invitation does not specify a certain dress code you have more freedom of dress, but this often makes the choice harder rather than easing it. The most important thing to keep in mind is the nature of the event. You will not wear to a wedding what you would wear to a business event. The time of day the party will take place is also important. If it is during the day, then a fresh summer suit will suffice, while an evening event requires wearing a dress. The dress can be long or knee-length, in bright or gentle colors, with or without floral patterns, but definitely without needless tackiness. White pants with a fresh airy top or tunic is also a great solution.

In all cases

It is good to know that high-heels may not be the best idea for this sort of parties. Your heel may sink in the soft lawn and make your movements look awkward. Platforms or flat shoes are the tested and approved leaders for garden parties. However, they have to be elegant, not sporty, beach shoes or everyday shoes. If you do not have suitable flats or platform shoes, then it is better that you risk small heels then ruin your whole look with un-matching shoes.

It is also advisable that you bring a light jacket, especially if the party is going to be in the evening. This will keep you not only from the evening chill but will also keep biting insects at bay. It goes without saying that this jacket has to be in sync with the rest of your outfit. An airy, transparent shawl will do perfectly if you do not have a suitable jacket. And as for insect repellents, avoid spraying them all over yourself at the event. Do this at home if the product you’re using does not have a strong and distinctive smell. Make sure that you do not create a hideous combination of perfume and insect repellent.

Finally give some thought to the purse you will be using. A large, bulky purse will be somewhat cumbersome. You will need a clutch purse or better yet a purse with a long strap which will give your hands more freedom, so that you can easily hold a glass or dish, shake hands with friends or meet new people.

Whatever your decision is, once you are at the event forget about your doubts and have fun. Don’t think about what you could have worn or should have done, unless you want to spoil your evening. Enjoy your garden party, that’s what you are there for.

Decoding the dress codes – Semi-formal

Even though we live in the age of information technology it still happens occasionally, especially among the young and inexperienced, to be confused when it comes to what exactly a certain dress code allows. This is why we have decided to use this series of articles to acquaint you with the different dress codes and their practical meaning.

Semi-formal

This is the least formal of all formal dress codes which is why sometimes it can be considered as a double edged sword. It gives more freedom of decision, which comes with a greater probability of mistakes. Most often this dress code is the required attire for weddings, theater plays, company events or evening parties.

For men, the semi-formal dress code is more diverse than any of the other dress codes. You can wear either a tux or a suit in a more unusual color. If you are wearing a tux, then wear a waistcoat in place of the sash worn in black tie. The bow-tie can be in any color. It is permissible that the waistcoat is a different color, but in this case the bow-tie has to be colorful too.

In the boundaries of this dress code gentlemen usually go for the classical suit. A suit in a traditional color is safest – navy blue, gray, indigo or brown. Barely noticeable stripes are also allowed. Of course, the semi-formal code allows suits in more unusual colors, such as burgundy, yet such a choice requires not only boldness but also a talent for color coordination within the bound of the dress code.

There is more freedom in selecting a tie. The tie can either be bright and fashionable or a classic, the same color as the suit. The shirt is most often white. If you want to wear a shirt in a different color you may, as long as it is coordinated with the tone of your suit. Contrasting combinations are not forbidden, but can look ridiculous if they are not tastefully assembled.

The shoes are classic dark, preferably leather.

This dress code is again more permissive for ladies, allowing for a greater diversity. Very popular is the cocktail dress – knee-length and without lush decorations. The fabric however must be quality, not everyday fabric- lace, silk, velvet, atlas, etc. The line must be simple and elegant. A required accessory for such an outfit is a small purse. The shoes must be elegant, while their heel must be appropriate for the event and complementary to the figure.

You must wear thin socks or stockings with no pattern or decoration.

Accessories must be carefully selected and kept to the bare minimum.

For braver and more daring ladies, the semi-formal dress code allows a combination of a chic shirt-blouse in a light color and black, grey or navy trousers or skirt. If you do not feel secure in your ability to make an ensemble which will be in alignment with good manners, then go for the cocktail dress. It is always a winner.

Coachella beauty and beyond: How to do your hair and makeup for a music festival

Music festivals should be all about the music, but given the popularity of our Coachella fashion slideshow, it’s safe to say that festival style is the unofficial headliner of the season. And the season has just begun: Coachella’s second weekend is a day away and after it ends all other music festivals will quickly follow. We’ve shared our tips forfestival style and now it’s time to talk about how to do your hair and makeup for a music festival. To get the best advice, we turned to the Beauty Panel, our team of beauty blogging experts. Even if you’re not headed to Bonnaroo, Osheaga, Lollapalooza or another music festival this summer, their answers are ideal for any day you’ll be out and about under the hot, hot sun.

Challenge 7: With Coachella in full swing, it’s officially music festival season. How do you do your hair and makeup for a festival? See the answers now! »

While this challenge was all about hair and makeup, our panelists were quick to point out that skincare is just as important. (There’s a reason it’s one of our top beauty trends for spring!) Because music festivals generally involve being at the mercy of the elements—that is, the heat and humidity of summer—it’s important to make sure your makeup has staying power and that you’re fully protected from sun. So instead of using your usual foundation and pressed powders, when doing your makeup for a music festival it’s best to use a good primer and a BB cream instead. As for the sunscreen, you’ll want to load up on all and any products that have SPF. Many BB creams contain SPF and if your lipstick contains it too—much like the one Spiced Beauty’s Jennifer Francis used—then all the better.

For music festival hair, it was all about the braids and brightly-coloured highlights. Dee Thomson, from Liner and Glitter and Gloss, Oh My!, added purple and blue to her hair with hair chalk before twisting strands into a halo braid updo. Sandra D. Sobon ofMoms Makeup Stash also added colour with hair chalk, but opted for the trendy cascading curls of a waterfall braid instead. And because it’s not music festival hair without the addition of a flower crown, you’ll be pleased to see that many panelists included flowers in their final looks.

Fashion trend

Every year around this time, thousands of music lovers prepare to flock to locales across North America and Europe for weekend-long celebrations of peace, love and cut-offs. Think Woodstock 2.0, where the new brand of flower children wear hair wreaths purchased at Urban Outfitters, performers don Céline (ahem, Kanye), and the only cause is having your picture taken by a street-style blogger.

Music festivals such as Coachella (California), Bonnaroo (Tennessee) and Osheaga (Montreal) have become important trend-breeding grounds for designers and retailers; festival fashion items like crop tops, feathered headdresses, knit vests and flowy maxi dresses have become almost as relevant as what comes down the ready-to-wear runways.

And while the festival fashion trend serves as mainstay inspiration for designers like Isabel Marant, Anna Sui and Blugirl, it was given new life for Spring 2013 with an explosion of crafty macramé, 1990s-era printed T-shirts and fringe.

3.1 Phillip Lim’s largely 1990s-inspired collection set the freewheeling tone of Spring 2013′s brand festival fashion showing bright overalls, breezy floral printed jumpsuits, parka-esque summer weight vests along with those good ole logo T-shirts in black, white and red. Acne went even more literal, emblazoning “Music” across its cut-off T-shirts.

Even Upper East Sider Tory Burch had festival fashion fever, swapping out her typically preppy wears for embroidered blanket sweaters, oversized crochet necklaces, tie-dye dresses and fringed shorts.

The festival fashion trend has resonated since the original rock gods put their stamp on festival style at Woodstock during the summer of ’69—Janis Joplin’s circular rose-tinted glasses, Jim Morrison’s lace-up leather pants and Jimi Hendrix’s headscarves. But its transference into our collective style consciousness can be chalked up to one now-iconic look: Kate Moss, Glastonbury, 2005. Wearing tiny cut-offs, a black buttoned vest and—the festival pièce de résistance—mud-covered Hunter wellington boots, she redefined the look of a supermodel as she traipsed across the show grounds with then-boyfriend (and Babyshambles frontman) Pete Doherty. That paparazzi shot of Moss inspired leagues of lookalikes, propelling the British heritage brand’s wellies to the forefront of cooldom. And the love fest continues.

The best of Resort 2014: We snapshot the best mid-season offerings from Gucci, Dior, Oscar de la Renta and more

From Singapore to New York, in just a few short weeks the new Resort 2014 collections have taken us from one side of the planet to the other. So far, the collections are getting us excited for those fictitious rising temperatures designers seem to believe exist in January.

Both Tory Burch and Moschino’s Cheap and Chic lines kept things above-the-knee, offering a selection of short shorts and playful minis. Burch’s Moroccan influenced collection featured an exotic array of colourful vacation-ready prints while Moschino Cheap and Chic amped up the fun factor with floral prints and tie-dyes. On the runway at Christian Dior an equally flashy collection featured florals, lace and ladylike silhouettes not to mention intense colour blocking.

Florals also found popularity with Just Cavalli and Oscar de la Renta who both incorporated them into the majority of their chic cruise-wear pieces. Cavalli, who toned down the volume on his trademark animal print for botanical infused patterns, took the fresh and feminine route with layers of eyelet lace and gauzy chiffon. Oscar de la Renta, whose brand is the definition of ultra feminine, produced a selection of duchess-worthy summer party frocks featuring intricate floral embroidery and embellishments.

Escada and Gucci opted for more relaxed hues, with Escada choosing candy-coloured pastels and Gucci opting for iridescent earthy shades and metallics. Chanel’s show may have been the only one to channel the recent Met Ball’s punk theme with models sporting edgy pixie cuts and dramatic cat eyes. As far as the clothes were concerned, neither punk nor Singapore, the host country for the event, played an influence. Karl Lagerfeld may have been far from Paris, but with strings of pearls, tweed and a mostly black, white and crème palette, the line was nothing but classic Chanel.

Over The knee Boots Trend

Now that winter is approaching rapidly, you should ask yourself whether or not your wardrobe is ready to face the frigid temperatures. Layering is always a good idea when temperatures drop, but you can’t layer on your legs or can you? Why yes you can, with over-the-knee boots! With over-the-knee boots the general rule is ‘the simpler the better’. This means no embellishments such as zippers, straps or studs and the material itself is preferably made out of plain leather too. If you play by this rule, you might end up looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and that is not what we are aiming for here. We are going for business chic like Miranda Kerr or boho chic like Hilary Duff and Taylor Momsen.
